The beginning of this book has been more entertaining than any book I've ever been assigned to read. I particularly enjoy the way that the book Edwin is editing is already changing his life even though he isn't reading it for that purpose. His wife has read the section on how to improve their sex life, and he even attempted the "how to quit smoking" steps as though someone else had been controlling him.
"I am Edwin de Valu," he said. "I am Edwin Vincent de Valu, and I smoke too much. This is who I am."
He felt the panic in his chest slowly subside. He had almost lost grip on his identity; had almost let it disintegrate and drift into its composite parts; had almost lost the whole. (87)
The way this passage and the preceding efforts to quit smoking are told makes it seem as though he is under the effects of some kind of mind control, one that is making him unwillingly quit smoking.
